Tivo access works like a charm January 18, 2010 Patrick J. Wolfe (Georgia, USA) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this product strictly for it's ability to download video recordings (HD and SD) from my TiVo Series 3 HD DVR and convert said content to MPEG-4 video files. Works great, but keep in mind raw TiVo HD recordings are HUGE and take quite some time to download across 100Mbit ethernet.
For converting DVDs to video files I always use the free HandBrake utility. Works great 99% of the time! I like to raise the default quality from 70 to 80%. Not perfect, but the improvement in quality is worth the increase in file size IMO.
Does exactly what it says it will, but... April 28, 2010 R. M. Lozano (Lockhart, Texas - Home of the Best BBQ in Texas!) Now admittedly, I am using this product for only one of the many things it claims to be able do - making backup copies of my personal DVDs. I have found that it works perfectly well for doing exactly that, and I have had no troubles. How well it can handle Tivo, or a related program, I have no idea, but if you're purchasing this to copy DVDs to other DVDs for whatever reason, and with whatever other software handy, it works extremely well, exactly as it claims to - a safe and solid purchase!
Update: You need to get another program (I use Lil' Snitch) that will alert you when roxio popcorn is trying to connect to the internet, so you can prevent it from doing so. After a while I noticed that it would connect, and then when it would try to verify the DVD problems would occur and it would waste the disk. You can overcome this problem by 1) preventing it from connecting in the first place, and 2) skipping the verify process and going straight to "mount" once the disk is written.
Roxio Popcorn 4 not easy to use February 1, 2010 Nancy J. Severtson 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
The product seems to automatically compress copies unless the dual sided option is chosen. This is true even if the DVD to be copied is only half full. The compressed copies are of a lower quality than the original. Roxio Popcorn 4 is not a simple product to use if a person is going to do more than just copy a DVD. Copies made with the dual sided option chosen, even though I copy only on single sided DVD's, are fine.
Avoid at all costs -- horrible conversion quality with lost audio November 23, 2009 Scott Rose (Los Angeles, CA USA) 20 out of 22 found this review helpful
Beware of this product. Roxio should be ashamed of themselves for producing such an awful product with Popcorn 4.
We have a brand new 13" MacBook Pro with 4 GB RAM running Mac OS X 10.6.2, and we've been trying for days to use Popcorn 4
to convert unencrypted DVDs into MPEG4 format.
The results? ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE. Completely choppy audio at ANY setting, lots of pops in the audio, and worst of all -- completely lost audio because of audio skipping.
We even installed the latest software update to Popcorn 4 from Roxio's website, and the same problems exist. From a quick glance on the Roxio discussion boards on their website, we can see that we are not alone with our problems.
This Popcorn 4 product is a complete nightmare. There are plenty of FREE software programs available for the Mac which do a MUCH BETTER JOB than this product by Roxio. This product flat-out doesn't work.
For more definitive proof of how this product does not work, just visit the discussion boards on Roxio's website.
Too bad there isn't an option to rate this zero stars. March 7, 2010 Rick Snyder (Maine) 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
I bought this primarily for the Tivo Transfer program. Too bad it doesn't work. At all. There's no indication in the product description here on Amazon or on the Roxio website that Popcorn doesn't play well with Snow Leopard; in fact, it says it will run on OS X 10.6. It appears that the only way to make it work would be to install earlier versions of Java and even then there's no guarantee. Roxio support is atrocious. If you've got an earlier version of OS X on your Mac maybe this will work for you. As for me, I just paid $40 for something that's useless. Lovely.
